Third Day of School Photo

Homework will start up during the first full week of school.  The first day of homework will be September 14th.

Classroom Chain

At the end of the day the students worked on creating a classroom chain.  They were given five strips of paper.  Then they had to write a different talent that they possess on each strip of paper.  They were asked to add an illustration to their strip of paper to show how they have this specific talent.  Next they connected their strips of paper into a chain.  Finally they added their chain of talent to their classmates' chains of talent.  Tomorrow we should have a complete classroom chain of talents to put on our back wall.  We will post the completed chain tomorrow.

Science

Our first science lesson was today.  The students learned about the scientific method.  We watched a video on brainpopjr. to help us understand this process.  Then we went through the steps of the scientific method while completing an experiment together.  The question we worked on answering was:  What will happen if you add an anti acid tablet and water to a container (old film canister) and then seal it shut.  Watch the video below to see what the students learned.  Science Rocks!

Math

Today we started our first math lesson.  During part of the lesson the students were asked to make the number 254 as many different ways as they could with the blocks provided.  As a class they were able to figure out more than ten different ways to do this.  At the end of the lesson I gave the students a challenge question.  I asked them if they had 17 tens, how many ones would they need in order to get to the sum of 254.  Joel came up in front of the class and shared with us how he got the answer of 84.  They did a wonderful job on their first small group activity.

Chrome Books

Today each student was given an opportunity to learn more about their chrome books.  As a class they bookmarked a couple of popular math websites that we will be using frequently throughout the school year.  They even were given a chance to complete their first round of xtramath.  Also, they were given their email address and password so they will be able to log onto Google Docs, Google Drive, etc.  After logging onto their Chrome books they were asked to go to Google Docs to create some statements that were either true or false.  Next they sent these documents to me.  Throughout this week I will be answering their true and false statements.  Afterwards they will be grading my answers to these statements.  This will all be done paperless.

PBIS

Today, as a school, we had our first assembly.  The assembly focused on being responsible, respectful, and safe.  After the assembly all the third graders were brought to the cafeteria and then to the playground.  During these times they learned about the behavior expectations that are expected from them while in these two locations.  Tomorrow, they will learn about the expectations they need to follow in other parts of the building.

First Day of School

The first day of school went well today.  The students did a great job overcoming the heat.  We created classroom expectations and organized our supplies.  It was a lot of listening for them, but they did a nice job.
It's okay for your child to bring a water bottle and snack to school.  Also, if they have a small pencil sharpener they may bring that too.
