M&M Commercial Reviews

The link below will send you to a commercial from the past.  The students are working on writing reviews for this commercial.  They are being asked to write a paragraph that includes a main idea, at least 6 supporting details and a closing.  I will post some of their reviews tomorrow.

Math Start-up Questions

At the start of math class the students are sent math problems through Google Drive.  They solve them individually.  At times they talk with other students on how they figured out the solutions to theses problems.  We always discuss them as a whole class after about 10 minutes.  Below the photographs, are some example problems.

Can you add the missing fractions for each number  below?

M&M Problem

Here is a fraction problem the students are working on in teams to complete during math this week.  A couple groups have already completed this math problem.

1. Open a bag of M&M’s.  
2. What is the total amount of M&M’s found in your whole bag of M&M’s? 23
3. Make a table displaying how many M&M’s of each color you have.

4. What is the unit fraction for your bag of M&M’s? 1/23
5. Write a fraction naming the amount of each color M&M you have out of the whole set of M&M’s. 9/23, 4/23, 4/23, 2/23, 2/23, 2/23
6. Take 12 of your M&M’s.  Eat one-fourth of them.  How many M&M’s did you eat?  How many M&M’s are left? 19  

Eat two-thirds of these M&M’s.  How many M&M’s did you eat? 6  How many are left? 3

7. Eat the remaining M&M’s that you have from the original 12.  Write a fraction naming how many M&M’s you ate. 9/12
8. Trace a large circle from your template. Color in six-eighths of this circle with the color of your favorite M&M.  Write the fraction of the amount not colored in.  Can you think of another way to write 6/8?  3/4
9. Draw a picture.  There are 30 M&M’s.  1/5 of the M&M’s are red.  1/10 of the M&M’s are blue.  ⅙ of the M&M’s are green and 2/6 of the M&M’s are yellow.  The rest of the M&M’s are brown.  
10. Using the table you created, make a pictograph displaying this data.
11. Using the same data, create a bar graph.
12. There were five boxes of M&M’s.  Each box contained 6 bags of M&M’s.  Each bag of M&M’s contain 20 M&M’s.  If half of the M&M’s were brown, how many brown M&M’s were there?  
13. The third graders ate ⅔ of these M&M’s.  How many M&M’s are left?
14. If their teacher ate 9/10 of these remaining M&M’s, how many M&M’s were left?
15. Draw a picture.  ½ of the M&M’s are green.  ⅖ of the M&M’s are blue.  The rest were red.  How many were red?

Guided Reading

The students have been learning a lot about bones, muscles and body systems.  Below are some of the things students wrote and learned so far in this unit.

If each of your fingers only contained one bone we wouldn't be able to move our fingers in certain directions or grab or pick up things because you wouldn't have enough joints.   Josephe and Maddie

1. What is a skeleton? A skeleton is 206 bones starting at the top of your skull and ending at your toe bones.

Muscles are things all over your body that helps you move your body. There are three types of muscles Cardiac, smooth, and skeletal muscles. Cardiac and smooth muscles are involuntary. That means they move on their own! Some involuntary muscles are, The heart, Our stomach, and our organs! Skeletal muscles are connected to our skeleton and are voluntary.Voluntary muscles are muscles that your brain has to send a signal to move your arms, legs, etc. There are many different muscles in our body!

Bones are important because we need them to move around and they help you pick up  toys and spoons.Also bones protect your heart and lungs, bones protect your brain.Inside the bones bone marrow make blood cells.That is why bones are very important to humans. Julian and Tifa

11.  It is important for involuntary muscles to work on their own.  It is important because if you had to tell your heart to pump you would never get any sleep or be able to eat or drink.                                                                                                                                                                                                                              

12.  It is important to keep your muscles strong especially your cardiac muscle.  It is important because if you don’t keep your muscles strong you won’t be able to do much and you will be lazy or a couch potato.   Allie and Joel

Reminder

There will be no school on Monday, January 18th.

Science Projects

After completing research on the three types of rocks the students started to create posters, slideshows, etc. with partners.  They will use their posters to share the information they learned about the different rocks with their classmates.  Each group will be asked to present their findings to the class.

Making Words

This morning students worked in pairs creating as many words as they could think of using the letters provided to them.  They created many words using different word families.  At the end of this activity the students learned that all their letters spelled, third grade school store.
