The Lightning Thief

Our class went to a play at the Stephanie Weil Center this morning.  The play was called, "The Lightning Thief."  Below are some of the students reviews of this play.  It was an interesting play.

I think the play was amazing. I would make this play 5 out of 5 stars.   One reason the play was amazing is all of the actors worked really hard on the play. Another reason is that they did not mess up.   The third reason is I loved how the magic sea shell was actually a portal.  Another thing is that the underworld is under Las Vegas.  This is where an evil god lived  and it also said that if you sleep in a hotel one night turns into 100 years.  The Lightning Thief was the best play-musical.  I do recommend that you go to this play. The Lightning Thief was an ok play. My first bad thing about the play was the part where they almost kissed eww! The next bad thing about the play is the play was kind of hard to understand, because they were jumping around and doing so many things at once. The third bad thing is there were sad parts. For example it was sad when the teenage girl was dying.  A few good things about the play were there were a lot of bad guys for example Medusa, Cyclops, Bull and the guy from camp half-blood. One more good thing about the play is their actors and characters were great for example in parts they used good expression.  Those are the things that I hate and liked about the play. written by Ambrosia

The Lightning Thief.

The Lightning thief play was an okay play. I would give it 3 out of 5 stars. One good thing about Lightning Thief is that it had the gods in the play.  Another good thing about the Lightning Thief is that it had funny parts, like when Percy’s mom and Percy were talking and all of a sudden we saw a sheep’s butt shaking. It was Percy’s friend wearing a sheep costume. These are the thing I didn’t like. First there was to much singing. Another bad thing was that it was confusing in the beginning, but in the middle and end it got interesting. I think you should not go to the play, but if you love songs you may want to see it. written by Austin

The book

The Lightning Thief was a good play.  One reason I like it is that it had a big plot jump at the beginning.  Percy (the main character) had a field trip.  Then he went away from his group. Next he got expelled from his school because he went away from his group. Last he got sent to a half-blood camp. A half-blood is half person half god.  Another reason I liked the play is that it is fun to watch and there is something for everyone to enjoy. There was singing, fighting and adventure.  Overall I think it is a good play and you should try to see it.   Written by Joey

I didn’t really like the play the “ Lightning Thief ”. The first reason I didn’t really like this play is because I didn’t really get what the whole play was about. Also it kept going back and forth. I didn’t get the play. The next reason is there was a lot of singing in this play.  There was  a little too much singing for me. I didn’t really like this because there was more singing than talking. It sounded like opera singing. Also it was not kid appropriate, because the people used bad words. The next reason I didn’t like this play is because the kid’s mom goes under the ground to a bad god who ruled the underground. I did not know at the end of the play how she came back up to the surface. She just came out walking and singing. Also there were too many scenes. Those are some ways I disliked this play. Third Grade Chefs Know..........

This morning the students worked on making words.  All of their letters spelled the beginning of a sentence.  The beginning of the sentence was "Third grade chefs know".  Then each pair of students had to complete this sentence.  The students completed this sentence in different ways.  Here were some of their sentences.

Third Grade Chefs

It was great to see so many students cooking this week.   A lot of the students shared some great food with us on Friday that they baked or cooked by themselves with minimal help.  Others shared their cooking experiences with us.  I loved seeing the pride in each of them as they told their stories to their classmates.  I appreciate your willingness to allow your children to gain this positive experience.  It seems they all created great memories even if there were some frustrations during this whole process.  Sometimes you have to fail first in order to succeed later on.  It was a great life experience for them.  Below, I shared Brayden's paragraphs and Joel's paragraphs summarizing their cooking experiences and their use of math during their times as chefs.

Hello this is Brayden I am here to tell you about my experience cooking. I was amazed that my mom or dad did that every night. I first made Chicken Teriyaki Recipe. I was also amazed how long it takes to cook a simple dinner. At first it took a while heating up the oven and making homemade teriyaki, then we got to a point where it said to marinate for 20mins and it was already 12 to 7. I found the hardest part to be making the teriyaki. This is how to make it:  In a large bowl, whisk together all marinade ingredients- 1/4 cup soy sauce, 1/3 cup squeezed orange juice, 3 Tbsp honey, 1 tsp ginger and 1 tsp sesame oil. I also added rice and Vegetables. The easiest part was making the cake that I am bringing in for snack. Overall it was a very tasty meal and the best part about it was that I made it myself.

The way I used math in this cooking assignment was when I used the measuring cup. I had to figure out when to stop filling it up. Also in the cake it asked for 1 whole cup of something (I don't remember what it was) so I had to use  2 ½ cups. Those are the ways I used math in cooking.

Anyway first I found a recipe and wrote it down.  Then I went to the store to get some ingredients for my chex mix.  I got all the ingredients except for the high ones. Crowd-”Hahaha!!!”  After that my dad paid for everything.  I even scanned everything.  We were surprisingly shopping for 30 min!  It’s usually an hour because the parents talk.  We got home and started cooking!!!  I did almost everything.  I measured the ingredients, mixed them together and baked them.  Voila!!!  My famous recipe!  (It’s famous.)  I had fun making chex mix.  I usually help my mom bake but she helped me a little.  We now have something to sell at the Spring Fling Bake Sale.

I had to figure out how to make ¾ of a teaspoon.  I figured out that ½ + ¼ = ¾ of a teaspoon.  I had to count 6 tablespoons for the butter.  I am also going to use math to double this recipe.

Working with First Graders Again

On Friday morning the students continued to work with the students from Ms. Marzouki's class on writing letters to local businesses asking for their support in developing a Makerspace at our school.  During this time together the students finished writing their letters, edited their letters with a teacher, and worked on coding.  It was fun to watch the students interact with one another.  I have an example of the type of letters being written by students posted below.  This letter was written by Ambrosia and her two first grader friends.

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are children from Cooper Elementary School. My name is Ambrosia and I am making this letter with Adriana and Gallery. I am in third grade and Gallery and Adriana are in first grade. We are building a Makerspace at our school. A Makerspace is a place where we can learn. For example we can make crafts, build robotics and experiment with things. In the Makerspace we can watch how butterflies grow from a caterpillar to a butterfly. We were wondering if you could help by giving us some tools for building. We could use scissors, crafts, wood,  Legos, or even money would help us out. You don’t have to, but if you could help with anything that would be great. Can you donate some old stuff for the Makerspace?  Also in the Makerspace we could use flowers and other planting supplies for making a garden. Thank you for taking the time to read our letter.

Building Towers

Many of our science groups are working hard at building structures that can withstand a magnitude 8 earthquake.  They built shakers with their legos in order to complete this experiment.  They are trying to make the highest structure possible.  The highest structure built so far was about 60 centimeters tall.  It's a lot of fun watching each group of scientists problem solving while building their towers.

Continued Plant Observation

The students continued to measure and observe their plants this past week.  The plants are growing quickly.  Also, we are reading an article from the newest Ranger Rick magazine about bees.  The students are learning about the importance bees play in the growth of plants.  They will be using dead bees to pollinate their plants once they reach this stage in their life cycle.

School Store

Our school store had another successful sale this past week.  We will continue to have our school store until the end of May.  Allie, Allison, and Kylie did an awesome job working at this week's sale. We sold popsicles for the first time and they sold out quickly.  We will have to sell popsicles again this upcoming week.
