Creating Summaries

This week the students are learning how to summarize an article from a magazine.  They are being asked to include a topic sentence (main idea), at least four supporting details, and a closing.  We will be working a lot on this skill throughout the school year.  Please check your child's reading homework this week to make sure they include complete sentences.  Also, they should always have the main idea written out completely with four supporting details.  This practice will help them learn to write summaries more successfully.  I added a summary created by Logan and Maddie to this post.

Tiger cubs are hard to take care of.  One reason cubs are hard to take care of is because the mom has to get all of the food for them.  Another reason is the mom has to protect her cubs from leopards and wild dogs.  Cubs are hard to take care of, because the mom has to make them healthy before she can let them go out of the den by themselves.  My last reason why they’re hard to take care of is the mom has to train them to hunt, so they can survive.  These are a few reasons why tiger cubs are hard to take care of.
