Wisconsin Citites

Here is a problem that some students were asked to solve.  These answers were from Julian and Josephe.  These two boys are doing a terrific job solving these problems as a team.

Round each city population to the nearest thousand.  Fill in the table below.  Then answer the question below the table.

City
Population to the nearest thousand
Population to the nearest thousand doubled
Sheboygan
50,000
100,000
Appleton
73,000
140,000
New Berlin
40,000
80,000
Green Bay
100,000
200,000
Milwaukee
595,000
1,190,000
Eau Claire
66,000
132,0000

Put the following cities in order from the city with the smallest population to the city with the largest population.  Then find the difference between the city with the largest population compared to the city with the least population.

Round the populations of Milwaukee and Sheboygan to the nearest ten thousand.  How many times larger is Milwaukee’s population than Sheboygan’s population?  Share your answers below.  Explain your thinking.

New Berlin
Sheboygan

Eau Claire

Appleton

Green Bay

Milwaukee

Milwaukee is 600,000 and Sheboygan is 50,000
Milwaukee is 12 times bigger than Sheboygan
