Math Review

The students are solving problems, like the ones below, to help review different math concepts they have learned during the school year.  Julian solved some of the problems below.  We will continue with these problems in the near future.

Danica and Tifa both went to the theatre to watch a  movie this weekend.  They both bought a box of popcorn .  By the end of the movie Danica ate ¾ of her popcorn and Tifa ate ¾ of her popcorn too.  Danica ate more popcorn than Tifa.  How can this be true?

Danica had a bigger popcorn box.

Before the movie started they each bought a 500 mL cup for soda.  Throughout the movie Danica drank 3 ½ cups of soda.  Tifa drank 4 cups of soda.  How many milliliters of soda did they drink in all?  How many liters of soda did they drink in all?

Danica drank 1,750
Tifa drank 2,000
2,000+1,750=3,750

When they first got to the theater Danica bought two tickets and Tifa bought three tickets.  Each ticket cost $6.50.  If Danica paid with a $20 bill, how much change did she get back?  Tifa had $20 too.  Did Tifa have enough money to pay for her three tickets or did she have to borrow some money from Danica?
Danica got $7 back and Tifa got 50 cents back.

The movie they watched at the theater was “The Jungle Book.”  It started at 10:20.  When did the movie end?  Use the link above to help you figure out how long the movie was.

In the theater there were 40 chairs.  They were put into an array.  Using graph paper, make as many possible arrays for 40 as possible.  Chose the one array that you think the chairs look like in the theater.  Explain your thinking.

Gardener Maddie is planning on making a new garden at her house.  She would like to have a garden with the perimeter of 36 feet.  Maddie would like her garden to have the largest area possible.  Using grid paper, draw her garden.
She plans on planting three types of flowers in her garden.  She would like to plant roses, marigolds and sunflowers.  She loves roses, so she would like to have ½ of her garden to be set aside for this type of flower.  The other section of the garden that is not being used for roses, she would like to share equally between marigolds and sunflowers.  Split her garden into these three sections and label each section with a fraction and type of flower.  Also, find the area and perimeter of each of these sections.
Maddie plans on putting two seeds per square foot of her garden.   How many seeds will she need for each type of flower?
Each rose seed packet has 8 seeds.  Each marigold seed packet has 10 seeds and each sunflower seed packet has 12 seeds.  How many packets of each seed will she need to buy?

Chef Allison loves cooking.  She gets lots of customers to her restaurant she named after her Dad.  On Monday she had 25 customers.  On Tuesday she had double the amount of customers as Monday.  On Wednesday she had 20 less customers than on Tuesday.  On Thursday she had ⅖ of the customers as she had on Monday.  On Friday she had half the amount of customers as she had on Wednesday.  Create a bar graph and pictograph for this data.  Write down three statements from the data you collected.
