Fractions

This week the students are starting to learn about fractions.  Below are a couple of problems they have been asked to solve.  There are examples of two students responses to a couple of these problems below.

Allison made a garden in the shape of rectangle and divided it into 6 same-size sections.  She planted flowers in 4 of the sections.  What might Allison’s garden have looked like?

Trace a hexagon.  Divide it into 6 equal parts.  Shade in two parts.  Write the name of one part.  Write a fraction for the amount shaded.  Write a fraction for the amount not shaded.

Trace a trapezoid.  Divide it into 3 equal parts.  Shade in three parts.  Write the name of one part.  Write a fraction for the amount shaded.  Write a fraction for the amount not shaded.
