Fraction Starter

The problems below were some review fraction problems for the students to solve.  The photographs are of Sophia explaining to the class how she solved her problems.

Write a multiplication sentence for the apples above.  Write a repeated addition problem for this box of apples too.  If ⅗ of the apples will be used for making applesauce, how many apples will be used to make applesauce?

Make a eight inch line.  Divide it into eight equal parts.  Put a 0 at the first tick and a 1 at the last tick.  Fill in the rest of the fractions for your number line.  Circle the fractions ⅜ and ⅝.  From the fractions that you circled, which one is bigger.  Explain how you know this.

Make two hexagons.  Color in ⅙ of one of these hexagons.  Shade in ⅓ of the other hexagon.  What fraction is smaller?  Explain how you know this.

Create your own fraction problem.
